Do you know Aveyron ?
Do you know Aveyron?
Do you know this French department in the Occitane region?
The heart of Aveyron is a discovery for those who love nature and history. Indeed, Aveyron abounds with a local historical culture, and beautiful landscape.
The Aveyron is a lot of roads and winding paths, expanses of water and rivers lined with forests, all in a mountain range.
As a photographer I see the Aveyron as a landscape with 2 floors :
The lower floor presents the valleys and rivers, the mountainsides covered with vegetation.
The upper floor is above the forests and the hydro-electric dams, where appear on the clear summits small villages and farms. On these heights are fields, meadows or water bodies.
Sheep, cows, live together peacefully on these invisible heights from below.
My wife and I started our Aveyron exploration through the Gorges de la Truyère. Barely 50km from our base in Estaing! But in the Aveyron, and its winding roads, it takes an hour. (Especially if you do not know!)
The Gorges de la Truyère, are several 10 kms of valleys in which “the Truyère meanders”! It offers those who know the area, some small beaches difficult to access for aquatic activities. For lovers of beautiful landscapes, we must find magnificent views from above! So here we go to mount, climb, zigzag in search of the perfect spot!
Once this spot found, a moment of meditation, and some shots, it is left for the adventure, and even more turns, and try to go and find other photographic spots spotted beforehand on the map.
Only after finding a bridge to change mountainside, a happy coincidence: the village of Vallon, on which sits a magnificent small castle (as it is full in Aveyron) made its appearance. Of course, as the day passes, the sun starts playing hide and seek behind the mountain opposite! Good for the photographer I am! The colors of the sky are stronger and the light is ideal!
Let’s hurry up all the same, because it’s getting late and taking Estaing by night would be great, as long as we’re there!
Good Estaing by night is not so bad, but it will return 3 days later to enjoy this sky of fire behind the castle! (and yes, another one, but there are few everywhere)! Estaing is surrounded by mountains, finding the right light, if possible golden, is far from easy! Indeed, before the golden hour arrives, the sun is hidden behind a mountain! In mountainous landscape it is often the case! It is therefore necessary to organize geographically and plan the orientation and azimuth of the sun, and then find the location to get the best composition as possible !
That’s it, it’s in the box!
In the Aveyron, there are some rivers and a lot of mountains, there will be some waterfalls! One in particular, called “the Jumping Dog”! Named so it seems because it has multiple levels and water flows like a staircase! You must first walk in a micro-village with its ancient doors … Then make a few hundred meters in the forest to finally find it!
This waterfall is between two mountains, where it is possible to make a hike of about 8km, the waterfall being the point of departure and arrival! Beautiful forest!
Do not hesitate to visit the gallery!
