One looks at them for a long time, photographing their lines, the light, the colours. <strong>Then we head off again with a perfectly sharp picture\u2026 and almost no memory.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-2779cdd\" data-block-id=\"2779cdd\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Conversely, it sometimes happens that a detail caught for a second \u2014 a hand resting on a table, a silhouette in the mist, a reflection on a pane of glass \u2014 stays with us for years.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-5e197f7\" data-block-id=\"5e197f7\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Why do certain scenes escape us even though we watched them? Seeing and looking: a difference in intention<\/h2><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-b6f4f96\" data-block-id=\"b6f4f96\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">In common usage,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dragonstreetphotography.eu\/en\/eye-physiology-photography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <strong>seeing is almost involuntary<\/strong>.<\/a> An image reaches us, we see a car drive past, a light turn on, someone enter a room. We hadn't asked for anything: our eyes were open, the world presented itself. (We are drawn to movement, light, etc.)<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-ef58a40\" data-block-id=\"ef58a40\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>Watching, on the contrary, presupposes a decision. <\/strong>The gaze wanders, lingers, searches. We look at a face to read an emotion there. We look at the sky because the storm is approaching. <strong>We look at a photograph because it holds onto something of us.<\/strong> \ud83e\udd14<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-e24b769\" data-block-id=\"e24b769\"><style>.stk-e24b769 {margin-bottom:50px !important;}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>The formula would therefore seem obvious: seeing is passive, looking is active.<\/strong>  Yet, photographers rarely talk about \u2019learning to look\u00ab. They talk about learning to see. It is not a vocabulary mistake. Perhaps that is where it all begins. \ud83d\ude2c<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-29317ff stk-block-heading--style-h1-standard\" id=\"2-on-peut-regarder-sans-vraiment-voir\" data-block-id=\"29317ff\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">2. One can look without really seeing<\/h2><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-e9075d4\" data-block-id=\"e9075d4\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">We look constantly. At screens, faces, streets, landscapes, hundreds of images every day. <strong>But our attention cannot retain everything.<\/strong> She sorts, simplifies and eliminates. <strong>It often replaces what is actually in front of us with what it already thinks it knows.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-dc46978\" data-block-id=\"dc46978\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">A beach becomes \u00aba beach\u00bb. A mountain becomes \u00aba mountain\u00bb. A loved one becomes that so familiar face that we stop noticing the changes. <strong>We recognise before we observe.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-51487a1\" data-block-id=\"51487a1\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>This is also what happens when we arrive in front of a spectacular location with a photograph already in mind.<\/strong> We look for the expected viewpoint, the familiar composition, the image that will prove we were there. We look closely, sometimes for a long time, but we no longer truly see the place. We check that it resembles its representation.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-3862982\" data-block-id=\"3862982\"><style>.stk-3862982 {margin-bottom:50px !important;}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>The gaze is directed. The world ceases to be a backdrop; it becomes a presence once again.  <strong>To see, in the photographic sense, would therefore not be to receive an image, but to make oneself available to what was not foreseen.<\/strong> \ud83d\ude2e\u200d\ud83d\udca8<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-922035d stk-block-heading--style-h1-standard\" id=\"4-ce-que-lappareil-photo-change-a-notre-regard\" data-block-id=\"922035d\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">4. What the camera changes to our gaze<\/h2><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-fdeb588\" data-block-id=\"fdeb588\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>It is easy to believe that the camera serves to preserve what the eye has seen. In reality, it teaches us above all everything we had not seen.<\/strong> \ud83d\ude31<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-c231b75\" data-block-id=\"c231b75\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>In the viewfinder, the world becomes a frame. You have to choose what goes into it, and accept what stays outside.<\/strong> A slight variation in height transforms the relationships between the shapes. A step to the side makes a line appear, a post disappear or brings two silhouettes closer together. <strong>Light no longer merely illuminates: it separates, conceals, reveals.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-icon-list stk-block-icon-list stk-block stk-ff2bae2 stk-block-icon-list--style-liste-standard\" data-block-id=\"ff2bae2\"><svg style=\"display:none\"><defs><g id=\"stk-icon-list__icon-svg-def-ff2bae2\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 190 190\"><polygon points=\"173.8,28.4 60.4,141.8 15.7,97.2 5.1,107.8 60.4,163 184.4,39 173.8,28.4\"\/><\/svg><\/g><\/defs><\/svg><ul class=\"stk-block-icon-list__ul stk-block-icon-list--column\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-stackable-icon-list-item stk-block-icon-list-item stk-block stk-66e8d05\" data-block-id=\"66e8d05\"><div class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__content\"><span class=\"stk--svg-wrapper\"><div class=\"stk--inner-svg\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\"><use xlink:href=\"#stk-icon-list__icon-svg-def-ff2bae2\"><\/use><\/svg><\/div><\/span><span class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__text\">The camera also poses a very simple question: what am I actually photographing?<\/span><\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-stackable-icon-list-item stk-block-icon-list-item stk-block stk-340ad9a\" data-block-id=\"340ad9a\"><div class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__content\"><span class=\"stk--svg-wrapper\"><div class=\"stk--inner-svg\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\"><use xlink:href=\"#stk-icon-list__icon-svg-def-ff2bae2\"><\/use><\/svg><\/div><\/span><span class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__text\">A landscape? Or the sensation of being tiny in front of it?<\/span><\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-stackable-icon-list-item stk-block-icon-list-item stk-block stk-07c160d\" data-block-id=\"07c160d\"><div class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__content\"><span class=\"stk--svg-wrapper\"><div class=\"stk--inner-svg\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\"><use xlink:href=\"#stk-icon-list__icon-svg-def-ff2bae2\"><\/use><\/svg><\/div><\/span><span class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__text\">A face? Or the moment it abandons its polite expression?<\/span><\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-stackable-icon-list-item stk-block-icon-list-item stk-block stk-00a10fb\" data-block-id=\"00a10fb\"><div class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__content\"><span class=\"stk--svg-wrapper\"><div class=\"stk--inner-svg\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\"><use xlink:href=\"#stk-icon-list__icon-svg-def-ff2bae2\"><\/use><\/svg><\/div><\/span><span class=\"stk-block-icon-list-item__text\">A street? Or the solitude that runs through it at that hour?<\/span><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-fdab6fb\" data-block-id=\"fdab6fb\"><style>.stk-fdab6fb {margin-bottom:50px !important;}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">As long as the answer remains just a name \u2014 mountain, portrait, street \u2014 it<strong>photography risks describing. When it becomes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dragonstreetphotography.net\/prise-de-vue-traitement-direction-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a relationship, a tension or a sensation<\/a>, the image begins to say something other than \u00abit was there\u00bb.<\/strong> \ud83e\udd13<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-a068ecc stk-block-heading--style-h1-standard\" id=\"5-une-photographie-montre-aussi-la-maniere-dont-on-a-vu\" data-block-id=\"a068ecc\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">5. A photograph also shows the way in which it was seen<\/h2><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-359bdd6\" data-block-id=\"359bdd6\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>Two people placed in the same place, at the same time, with the same camera will not take the same photograph.<\/strong> Not because one necessarily has a better grasp of the technique, but because they will not notice the same things.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-979c66f\" data-block-id=\"979c66f\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">One will be drawn to the scale of the landscape; the other to a house almost invisible at its foot. One will wait for the sky to open; the other will photograph the encroaching shadow. <strong>Each will carve out from reality what echoes her history, her mood, her fears or her desires.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-05840d0\" data-block-id=\"05840d0\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">A photograph therefore never simply says: \u00abthis is what was in front of me\u00bb. It also says: \u00abthis is what I was able to see at that moment\u00bb.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-2e45d6c\" data-block-id=\"2e45d6c\"><style>.stk-2e45d6c {margin-bottom:50px !important;}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><strong>That is what makes the images personal, without them needing to be extraordinary.<\/strong> The subject may have been photographed a thousand times. That particular sense of attention, however, belongs solely to the person who was there.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-ad4ce0c stk-block-heading--style-h1-standard\" id=\"6-pourquoi-la-technique-ne-suffit-pas\" data-block-id=\"ad4ce0c\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">6. Why technique is not enough<\/h2><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-74e60d5\" data-block-id=\"74e60d5\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Technique is invaluable. It makes it possible to choose a depth of field, capture motion, and work with difficult lighting. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dragonstreetphotography.eu\/en\/develop-your-photographic-eye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>But it cannot decide what deserves our attention.<\/strong><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-2b3c036\" data-block-id=\"2b3c036\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">An image can be sharp, balanced, well exposed and yet remain silent. Everything is in its place, except perhaps the necessity to press the shutter.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-1579b20\" data-block-id=\"1579b20\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">On the contrary, <strong>an imperfect photograph can hold us back because it contains a hesitation, a proximity, a fragile truth<\/strong>. Her flaws do not automatically make her a good picture.
